GREED WILL DESTROY YOUR MARRIAGE

The wife voiced out, “Pastor, he only thinks about himself. He puts himself first”. The husband also felt the same way, “My wife does not care about us. She puts herself first.  She will hold on to her money when I am in need. I have made up my mind never to ask her for anything.”

Greed is one key tool that the enemy uses to destroy marriages. Once greed creeps into a marriage, the marriage will self-implode. The devil will just fold his hands and look. 

We are warned not to be greedy:

“Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot.”

What is the cycle of greed in marriage?

It begins when one party in the union begins to show that he or she cares just for himself or herself alone. The temptation, therefore, is that the partner responds the same way. They will enter into what is called self-preservation. They will say things like, “I will keep mine to myself also since that is what he or she does.” 

It takes a small mind to hold back when it is meant to give.  It is a scarcity mindset. Such minds will never enter into abundance.  

What is the Impact of Greed on your Marriage?

– There is an attack on Finances- What you have will never seem enough. There will be financial leakage. 

– There is an attack on the Future- You will never be able to come together to make concrete plans. What should be big dreams become splintered small and insignificant ones.

– There will be an attack on Fellowship- You will never be able to bond indeed as one and remain one. Any marriage that does not talk about their money is not talking at all. 

– There will be an attack on Faithfulness- Anyone who is not financially faithful will soon become morally unfaithful.

– There will be an attack on Forgiveness- You will remain offended at your spouse quietly, and you will not be able to live out the commandment of God to love and forgive.  

What is the cure for greed?

Put God first. Greedy people have an Ego. They Edge God Out (E.G.O) instead of Exalting God Only (E.G.O). Once you displace God, you will not honour Him or your marital vows. Every greedy person is an idolater. They worship self.
