QUESTIONS OF A GENERATION (1): WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH MY MUSICAL CHOICE?
My earliest memories of being introduced to music were to the likes of Don Moen, Ron Kenoly and others. That was all I knew until I stepped into senior secondary school. Then I came across other forms of music. Nothing prepared me for it. I did not want to be left out of the trends.
The ones that appealed to me most were the ones my generation called “blues.” Blues are romantically themed songs. They were ‘mood’ songs mostly. We had magazines that had their lyrics in them.
It did not take long before I noticed that I could not listen to those songs without the image of a girl or even a teacher I had a crush on would cross my mind. It was my pull into the world of strange sexual fantasies. If it crosses your mind, you will soon start finding opportunities for expression. Music was the trap.
Beloved, music is powerful. Worship is always accompanied by sounds, especially musical sounds. Every strange god has its own chants.
Music is not ordinary. It can be a tool of influence and control. Music is used in protest. I remember how the atmosphere shifted in protest when we began to sing songs like, “How many students Mobile Police (MOPOL) go kill o?” You see, even fragile youths suddenly come up with some strange boldness. Death is summoned and death is dared at the same time, but there have been times when death won. Music is not ordinary.
Music is used in political campaigns.
Music is used in warfare.
Music is used for orientation also. Do you remember the song “Read your Bible, Pray every day”?
The first proof that you are already deceived is when you think that music is actually just art and it has no influence on your soul. You think it is just about vibes and groove. No, it is not.
It was music that David used to help Saul regain his mind. If music can drive out a strange spirit, it surely can open the door to one also.
Do you remember the golden calf that Aaron built? They were lost in the worship of an idol. It led them to a strange indulgence. What did Moses and Joshua hear?
Exodus 32:17-18 NIV
[17] When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.” [18] Moses replied: “It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear.”
What Moses saw angered him:
Exodus 32:19 NIV
When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
It was accompanied by music. Listen to how their attitude was described:
Exodus 32:25 NIV
Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies.
They ran wild.
They were out of control.
They became a laughing stock for their enemies.
Be careful!
Do not be gullible.
Your music choice in life is very important.
What has music done to your soul?
Will you be willing to take a 30-day break and listen to only songs that edify the spirit? Take note of the difference.
