QUESTIONS OF A GENERATION (3): WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH COHABITATION?

QUESTIONS OF A GENERATION (3): WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH COHABITATION?

We had an interesting question pop up recently while interacting with singles about relationships and marriage. The question was, “What is the big deal with cohabitation? Isn’t cohabiting the reason why marriages fail?” The question is simply suggesting that, “If a man and a woman cohabit (live under the same roof) before marriage, they may be able to know each other better and decide whether they want to settle down in marriage or not”.

Beloved, this narrative is from the pit of hell and heavily sponsored by most of the movies of today, and even some so-called research supports it.

Dear one, in the day that we are living, decide early what pattern will sponsor your life- scripture or sensuality.

First, why do people cohabitate? Some say it is because they want to save costs. They believe that if they live together, they can avoid paying double rent and then pull funds together to get married or invest.

Second, some do it to confirm if they are compatible. They want to see if they are compatible in thoughts, ideologies and sexuality.

Third, some see it as a step towards commitment if they move in with the person they are dating. They become the “woman of the house”. They get to spend time together.

But what does the Word say, and what is the wisdom in it?

First, the person you move in with scripturally as a man is your wife and not a girlfriend. A man is to cleave to his wife, and they become one flesh. You do not move in to test whether it will work; you move in because you have covenanted to make it work.

Second, Apostle Paul wrote that there should not be a hint of sexual immorality among believers.

Ephesians 5:3 NIV

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality…because these are improper for God’s holy people.

Note the word “hint”. It means no suggestion. It means nothing should make a third party look and you and wonder what is happening.

If you go to visit your single pastor and you meet a lady in his house at 10 pm who does not look like she is leaving anytime soon, what would cross your mind? That is the power of “hint” here and there.

Why save money when you should be preserving your soul? You move in to save costs, but what is the cost of your own soul?

Do you know the Samaritan woman? Do you know she was cohabiting when Jesus met her? She already had five husbands, and the one she was living with when Jesus met her was not even her husband. She was in a strange relationship. She was lost.

If you follow scriptural pattern, and you listen to godly examples, you will not reduce your life to an experiment and yourself to a marital laboratory rat.

Do not believe a lie. There are amazing marriages following scriptural patterns. Why leave what works to experiment? Why leave scriptures for sensuality? Why leave the wisdom of God for the folly of the flesh? Wake up.
