“YOUNG MAN, CAN I HAVE THE BIRD?”

We were still boys. Kayode caught a bird. We decided to keep it in the corridor of Kayode’s house. We went out to play. When we returned, Kay’s younger brother was playing with “our” bird. We told him that we wanted our bird back. He insisted that it was his. He told us he caught in the corridor.

We kept arguing back and forth. Fortunately, a dear father-in-the-faith, Dr. Mike Oye drove in and met four boys arguing. He decided to intervene. After narrating our stories, he looked at Gbenga and asked for the bird. Gbenga kept insisting that it was his. Baba said, “Son, at least give me the bird first and then we settle it”.

Gbenga would not take it. Eventually and reluctantly, he released the bird. When he did, the bird was dead. While he was arguing with Baba, he had squeezed life out of the bird.

In God’s plan, you lose your life when you hold on to it and you gain life when you release it to God. Every “No'” you say to God kills life. If you don’t release your home and marriage to God when He is asking you to, you squeeze life out of your marriage.

Hear what Jesus said: For if you choose self-sacrifice and lose your lives for my glory, you will continually discover true life. But if you choose to keep your lives for yourselves, you will forfeit what you try to keep.
Matthew 16:25 TPT

It is the same way giving works in God’s kingdom too. You lose by hoarding and withholding while you gain by releasing.

The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.
Proverbs 11:24 MSG

What is God asking you to bring that you are holding tightly to? Is it Your life, your degree, your money, your car, your house, your home or your child?

There is no one who lets it go for God that does not gain even more.

“Listen to my words,” Jesus said. “Anyone who leaves his home behind and chooses me over children, parents, family, and possessions, all for the sake of the gospel, it will come back to him a hundred times as much in this lifetime—homes, family, mothers, brothers, sisters, children, possessions—along with persecutions. And in the age to come, he will inherit eternal life.
Mark 10:29‭-‬30 TPT
