APPRECIATE ACCOUNTABILITY
As we left the home of our beloved grandparents in the faith, my fiance (now my beloved wife) said that she had to answer a simple yet important question while she chatted in the kitchen with Grandma. Out of the blue, it came like a sharp sword: “Has he slept with you?” Irewamiri responded in the negative. Grandma said, “Tell us the truth so we can address the matter before you leave here.” Irewamiri confirmed that we had kept ourselves for marriage.
One of the things you must appreciate in life is accountability. Accountability is proof of responsibility. Accountability is the willingness to accept responsibility for your actions or errors. In your journey in life, make sure you have people who hold you accountable.
A man has the tendencies to misbehave when he knows that there is no one to ask him any questions.
David began to misbehave right after he got on the throne.
2 Samuel 5:13 NLT
After moving from Hebron to Jerusalem, David married more concubines and wives…
Some people’s spiritual decline began after they moved (relocated) from Nigeria. The spirit of nudity took over. You are now comfortable revealing your private parts because you are ‘revelling’ the summer season. Since you moved, prayer, fasting, and church attendance have been on a decline. You know that you have lost some grounds you gained. Some are actively engaged in sexual sins now.
David’s accountability relationships were non-existent at this point.
His “Pastor”, Prophet Samuel was already dead.
1 Samuel 25:1 ICB
Now Samuel died. All the Israelites met and had a time of sadness for him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David moved to the Desert of Maon.
You see David moved after the death of Samuel. Do you know that was where he would have made his first mistake of killing Nabal in anger? But do you know that was where his first tendency for women also showed? He took Abigail as his wife just as though he had been waiting for the death of Nabal.
1 Samuel 25:39-40 NLT
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise the Lord, who has avenged the insult I received from Nabal and has kept me from doing it myself. Nabal has received the punishment for his sin.” Then David sent messengers to Abigail to ask her to become his wife. When the messengers arrived at Carmel, they told Abigail, “David has sent us to take you back to marry him.”
The first time, he hid his tendency under the fact that it was God that killed Nabal.
The second time his greed and lust manifested was in the case of Bathsheba. He did not wait for Uriah to die. He schemed for Uriah’s death because he wanted to cover his tracks and marry Bathsheba (under the claim that she is now a widow).
2 Samuel 11:26-27 NLT
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.
Do you know the traditional days of mourning for the Jews was 30 days after the burial? David was so gripped by lust that he just waited for those thirty days and made his move. What a man!
When God would straighten him up, he sent him another “pastor” who could hold him accountable.
2 Samuel 12:1 NLT
So, the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to tell David…
Where have you missed it?
What decline are you on?
Be watchful! Run back to accountability relationships. Run back to that home where tough questions are asked.
Appreciate Accountability.
