DEAR FATHER, BE WARM!
A beloved one said, “My dad never hugged me all his life, not even once, and he did not tell me ‘I love you’ till he passed.
It was the other way for us- We ran out when we heard the sound of Daddy’s car. It’s a joyful moment. I know families for whom the sound of Daddy’s arrival was the signal for warmth to jump out of the window. Everyone becomes conscious and self-aware. The spontaneity of laughter disappears. Why? The Lion is back. The den must be quiet.
Dear father, I know you were raised to be strong, but it is not weakness to show love and express warmth at home. It does not reduce your greatness as a father when your family sees your smile, hears your voice of affirmation and feels the warmth of your presence.
A son took a gift home to his Dad and said, “Daddy, I came with this gift and I want to tell you that I love you”. The Dad looked at him with suspicion and told him to stop the joke. Daddy, lighten up!
Daddy, we know that the pressure to pay bills is there, but even “a pressure pot” releases a whistling sound. Sir, let the sound of joy disarm that atmosphere of pressure.
Dear Daddy, there was a day David had a very hectic day. He had gone to bring the ark of God from the home of Obed-Edom to the City of David. He had led the nation to make sacrifices. He had danced before the Lord with strength. He had given supplies to the people. He blessed them and sent them home.
Do you know what the Bible said he did next?
II Samuel 6:20 NKJV
Then David returned to bless his household.
After a hectic day, he was not going home to burden the family; he was going home to bless the family.
We must give kudos also to the father of the prodigal son. For the son to have known that he could return home to the father’s warmth, he deserves an accolade. Some fathers have cursed their sons. Some have disowned daughters. They pretend like their hearts do not long for them.
Dear father, let home be the place that your son can run back to, no matter what! Let home be the place where he knows that his wounds will be nursed and his dignity restored.
Dear father,
Create a place of incubation- sit on your seed to see them hatch, and form.
Create a place of protection- let your wings be the place to run to when the predators strike.
You have what it takes to be warm. Even if you were not raised that way, you can switch the image.
When your family hears “Daddy”, let it be a sound that heralds joy and warmth. May it not be like that of the young lady who said to me, “I wish it were my Dad that died and not my mum”. May that not be our portion.
