CLASSIC SERIES: COUNSEL FOR YOUNG HUSBANDS (2)
Just a few weeks after our honeymoon, I came home that evening to a slightly moody wife- one-word answers and feigned smiles.
I could not remember us having any fight earlier. I asked questions upon questions but got no answer.
For about two hours, she just wanted to be on her own. When at last she would speak, she told me what was wrong:
“I miss my family”.
In my mind, I went like, “Am I not family too?”
But this is the point where you need a lot of wisdom.
You need the wisdom of knowing what to say and what not to say.
I placed her head on my shoulders and kept patting it without saying a word.
Dear young husband, men are naturally wired to want to give answers. Never be in a hurry to give answers- give a hug, listen well, look into her face and smile.
Thank God! You just escaped a land mine.
If you dare say something like, “Am I not family too?” You just started World War 3.
There are times you just need to show that you care and understand and not necessarily profer a solution. She knows what to do. She only wants someone to talk to, and you are her best friend.
Think of what her best friend will tell her. She may likely say “Awwww” and give her a huge hug.
Do not be in a hurry to proffer solutions. Be calm. Show you care.
She wants you more than the answers.
