DO YOU HAVE A VOICE OF CAUTION AND CORRECTION?
I had a doctor who also doubled as a father. One of those days, I was ill and he knew that I would rather take injections for days than swallow one pill. One of those days, he saw that I was struggling even with receiving the injection from the nurse in the treatment room. My dad was there trying to get me to cooperate.
The next thing I knew was that our doctor walked in and landed a reset “hand of fellowship” on my teenage body. I froze and composed myself. I received the injection calmly and every other one needed afterwards. It was deliverance that day.
Listen, do you have a voice of caution and correction in your life? Do you have that voice that will not be sucked in by your feelings? Do you have that voice that will not cave in to you sentimentally? Do you have a voice that maintains clarity and retains sound judgment in decision-making? Do you have that voice that, once the name is mentioned, you have an automatic reset and you rethink your actions?
Many times, we think we can do life without any form of accountability. Self-accountability is a good start, i.e. holding yourself accountable. It is called self-control. You must have it. It is essential. But there are days when self-control will need the help of a stronger voice of accountability.
For instance, Judah would not have ended up on the laps of his daughter-in-law if there had been a strong voice around him when his walls and defences were crumbling. He had an enabler by his side. He encouraged him by saying, “You need it. It is no big deal”. He gave full support to soliciting a “prostitute”.
Genesis 38:20-23 NKJV
[20] And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. [21] Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?” And they said, “There was no harlot in this place.” [22] So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.” [23] Then Judah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”
David was at his lowest ever on that rooftop sucked in by the demon of voyeurism, while the giant of adultery stayed really close. Those on that roof with him when his self-control collapsed were enablers. They kept feeding him with the data he needed and all the support he needed to fall.
II Samuel 11:2-4 NKJV
[2] Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. [3] So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” [4] Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.
Would it have been the same if David were walking that rooftop with Prophet Samuel by his side? There are people whose presence (or consciousness of their presence) has enough weight to keep you from misbehaving.
When a man lacks such a voice, he becomes like a car at high speed without brakes.
Bicycles have steering and brakes
Motorcycles have steering and brakes.
Cars have steering and brakes.
Every instrument that makes progress also needs a measure of direction and control.
If you are a man in motion, if you are a woman going somewhere in destiny, show me that person who can speak the truth without mincing words to you. Show me that one who holds you accountable. Show me that person who is your voice of caution and correction.
Do you have any?
