THE HOLY SPIRIT- YOUR PARTNER IN BUILDING A GREAT MARRIAGE 1
I came back from work in the early days of marriage and my beloved wife had cooked an amazing meal—some lovely vegetables. There was just one challenge—there was fish on it. I rubbished the entire meal with my reaction. I told her straight away that I do not eat that kind of fish, and I assumed she should have been aware. I sank a gaping hole into the grounds of a young marriage. That affected us for a while.
Beloved, you must have a solid awareness that your journey as a couple most likely had different variations. Even Adam and Eve were not made from the same materials. The difference will become more pronounced in your words and your choices as time passes. The only glue that can make that work or bring a great bond is the Spirit of the Lord.
When it comes to your redemption, you are made from the same material—the Spirit of the Lord. This is why your bonding must first and foremost be spiritual. This is why the warning that a believer must not be unequally yoked to a believer is an essential one.
II Corinthians 6:14-15 NKJV
[14] Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? [15] And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
Marriage goes beyond the joining of bodies and souls. It is a joining of spirits first and foremost.
I Corinthians 6:16-17 NKJV
[16] Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” [17] But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
When you join bodies without the joining of spirits first, you will end up with a crisis in your hands. The Spirit of the Lord must be the uniting force for every marriage. If you get that right, you will get most other things right too. The foundation for building a great home is already laid.
Proverbs 24:3-4 NKJV
[3] Through wisdom, a house is built, And by understanding it is established; [4] By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.
If it takes wisdom to build a house, you must remember that there is such a person called the Spirit of Wisdom. Where wisdom fails, marriages will have cracks and crumble to the pressure of various elements.
If it takes understanding to establish a house, you must remember that there is also the Spirit of Understanding. Without understanding, a marriage can become a congregation of dead things. Love will not be aflame. Kindness will be absent. Joy will.be short-lived.
Listen, if it takes knowledge to fill a house, remember that there is the Spirit of Knowledge also. Where knowledge is absent, people are destroyed.
If your home is going through a lot, you need to ask, “Do we have the Spirit of the Lord with us and are we submitted to His leading?” Are you? If you are not, would you make that a new beginning today?
