THE HOLY SPIRIT- YOUR PARTNER IN BUILDING A GREAT MARRIAGE 2
We had a bit of a rough start to our marriage. The honey was there but it was laced with some landmine moments. As we argued back and forth on issues, I would ask Irewamiri, “What is the Holy Spirit telling you?” In those days, she would respond with silence.
(Most times, I knew the Holy Spirit was prompting me to apologise over an episode but then I asked her also to have at least some respite that the Holy Spirit was not ‘cheating’ me when I felt I was right or entitled to an apology)
But hours after the fight, I would ask her that question in a more relaxed atmosphere and she would reply with that amazing warmth, “The Holy Spirit was telling me to apologise too but I wanted you to feel the same pain I felt”. We would have a good laugh but that was how we got better.
The goal of your marriage should not be about the fight for rightness but the fight for oneness. If you sacrifice being one for being right, you will lose out on a whole lot. It may even be worse off; you can lose your marriage.
You must settle it early that you will both be submitted to:
– The Word of God and all it commands
– The Holy Spirit and all He instructs.
It is easier to submit to a man who is submitted to the Word of God and the Spirit of God. It is easier to lead and love a woman who wants to obey the Lord and the Word. Any home where these two are honoured will overcome storms and stand strong.
There is a song that we used to sing in our young days in the Baptist Church (in our mother tongue)
The home where Jesus lives
It is a joyful home
It is a joyful home
It is a joyful home
Oh! It is a joyful home
What makes The Spirit of the Lord dwell in a home is simple- He dwells in those who dwell in the home. If you have Him in you, then you will have him in your home. If you listen to him, then he will guide you into all truth. If you permit him, he will lead you into a stronger and better future. You cannot build a great home without the Holy Spirit.
Have you locked him out of your home? Open the door again in meekness, brokenness and humility.
