DEAR FATHER, DEAL WITH THAT ADDICTION QUICKLY

DEAR FATHER, DEAL WITH THAT ADDICTION QUICKLY

Many years ago, I was told the story of a beloved uncle. He would get drunk almost all the time. When his wife gave birth to their only son, he went on a drinking spree at a bar even though his wife was still being stitched by the doctors in the hospital.

What changed his life? He came back one night drunk as usual. His first daughter, who was still quite young, said some heavy words as he walked into his house. She said, “This useless and irresponsible man has gotten drunk again”. He heard, but that was his turning point.

Daddy, what do you know that you are battling with? Are you battling with gambling? Are you battling with drunkenness? Are you struggling with womanizing? Daddy, it would be your greatest undoing to begin to defend yourself when your sin finds you out. Deal with it before it begins a negative trend in your family.

Daddy, let me show you examples of men who did not deal quickly with matters they had:

Do you know Noah, sir? Noah was not so much of a drunkard, but one day, he got really high after drinking a lot of wine from the vine he planted. He ended up laying a curse on his grandson. He used a hammer to kill a fly on his private part. That was too heavy a blow on himself.

You will be surprised that King David’s challenge did not begin with Bathsheba, sir?

Do you remember that before the death of Nabal could cease to be news, he had grabbed his widow Abigail. That looked legit.

Do you know that right after he settled into kingship, one of the ways he compensated himself was to marry more wives and then, wait for it… more concubines?

2 Samuel 5:13 NLT [13] After moving from Hebron to Jerusalem, David married more concubines and wives, and they had more sons and daughters.

What was David looking for with concubines? Well! Did you know he already harnessed the wives of King Saul, also?

2 Samuel 12:8 NLT [8] I gave you your master’s house and his wives and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And if that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more.

What was David doing with his women problem? Nothing. Then he descended into the ditch finally- he slept with Bathsheba, tricked the husband to his death and then before we could say jack, brought her in as his wife.

He had warnings. How did I know? The bible said he despised the word of the Lord.

2 Samuel 12:9 NLT Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife.

He had issues he did not deal with. What did that lead to?

Amnon, his firstborn, raped Tamar, his only daughter. Absalom, his second son, killed Amnon, his brother. Absalom returned and attempted to dethrone and kill his father. He did the first part but failed in the second. However, he slept with all the women his father left behind in the palace as he fled.

What are you digging with your actions? A solid foundation or a sinking hole?

Dear Daddy, when will you fight that addiction?
