MERCY GIVES YOU ACCESS

One afternoon, my dad called me to pack my belongings from a state university as a first-year student and return home. He informed me that I would be resuming my studies at another university as a fresh law undergraduate. My dream had finally come true; I was now a proud law student.

Four years later, as a 400-level student, I finally learned the story behind my admission. The secretary of that senior official happened to come across my name and recognized it instantly. She exclaimed in Yoruba, “Ah! You are the ‘remove this one and add this one!'” She explained that the Special List had already been completed when her boss walked in and gave a simple instruction: remove this one name and add this one. That name that was added was mine.

The day I heard this, I realized that my admission wasn’t due to my qualifications or hard work. It was a testament to the mercy shown to me.

Beloved, mercy grants you access.

David was seeking someone to show kindness to in the house of Saul for the sake of Jonathan. He didn’t care who it was. When they gave him feedback, they mentioned a man named Mephiboseth, but they quickly discouraged him by pointing out Mephiboseth’s shortcoming: “He is lame.”

David then inquired, “Is there anyone left in the house of Saul who I can show kindness to for Jonathan’s sake?” The king responded, “Is there not someone in the house of Saul whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba then informed the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet.”

II Samuel 9:1, 3 NKJV

Despite the king’s attempt to disqualify him based on Mephiboseth’s lameness, David remained undeterred. He simply wanted to know where Mephiboseth was and sent for him.

“So the king inquired, “Where is he?” Ziba replied, “Indeed, he resides in the house of Machir, son of Ammiel, in Lo Debar.” Consequently, King David dispatched messengers to bring Mephiboseth out of Machir’s house in Lo Debar.”

II Samuel 9:4-5 NKJV

When the formidable General Joab arrives at the king’s table, and the handsome and irresistible Prince Absalom joins him, you’ll also find the limping Mephiboseth present.

If anyone were to ask Mephiboseth, “How did you manage to get here?” he would humbly reply, “It is by the king’s mercy.”
